The International Conference On Biometric AuthenticationWith more and more need to confirm that people really are who they say they are, the interest in biometrics has been growing. This type of authentication can be more secure than many other forms of authentication, and doesn't include the need for people to remember complicated passwords. It is difficult to fool biometric authentication devices as they are designed in ways to make this difficult to do, and biometrics are almost impossible to duplicate since they are different for each individual. In order to further the research and development of these types of systems and products, as well as provide a place for people in this field to meet and exchange information, the first International Conference On Biometric Authentication was held in Hong Kong from the 15th to 17th of July 2004. During the conference the topics of biometric technologies and modes, biometric systems, biometric implementations, and biometric applications were discussed. There was a second International Conference On Biometric Authentication in Hong Kong from the 5th to 7th of January 2006, covering the same broad topics as the first International Conference On Biometric Authentication, but discussing new developments and papers in these areas. Within the topic of biometric technologies and modes, the International Conference On Biometric Authentication discussed such things as biometric system security, identification and verification, multi-modal biometrics, representation and matching, sensing and preprocessing, and template storage and update. While discussing biometric systems, the International Conference On Biometric Authentication covered information on fingerprint, face, iris, voice, signature, gesture, and other biometric systems, as well as performance evaluation and soft biometrics. The International Conference On Biometric Authentication discussed large database indexing, parallel and distributed biometrics processing, real-time biometrics computing, and smart cards within the topic of biometric implementations. Finally, biometric applications were discussed at the International Conference On Biometric Authentication including airport security, banking, biometric cryptosystems, border control, forensics, logical access, and physical access. As well as discussions on the above topics, the International Conference On Biometric Authentication also had face, fingerprint, palmprint, signature, and voice tutorials and face, fingerprint and signature competitions. A search on the internet will also bring up some more detailed summaries of the various issues that were raised at these conferences as various people have posted such documents, though some of them are a bit technical. However, for those who are interested in learning more about what happened during the International Conference On Biometric Authentication, the proceedings of both conferences were published as Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) by Springer.
